Turning Adversity into Purpose
Well Financial and CHF team up
When Chris Harland, a director at Well Financial, experienced a heart attack last year, it was the last thing he expected. Chris was 48, in good health, active and ran a marathon 18 months before! Not the kind of person you’d never imagine facing such a life-threatening event. Yet, in what was described as a slow and painless cardiac event, Chris found himself facing a reality no one plans for.
It was believed that his heart attack stemmed from a hereditary condition—a silent factor lying in wait. Fortunately, medical intervention in the form of a single stent ensured Chris’s heart could recover. After spending four days in the hospital and taking 10 weeks away from the business, Chris returned to Well Financial with a renewed sense of gratitude—and purpose.
Reflecting on the ordeal and a brush with his own mortality, Chris shared, “I’m one of the luckier ones. My condition was treatable, and my recovery was straightforward. But not everyone—especially children facing cardiac challenges are as fortunate.”
This realisation sparked something deeply personal for Chris, recognising how fragile life can be and the struggles families face when their children battle severe cardiac issues, Chris sought a way to make his experience matter. This led to a powerful and purposeful partnership with the Children’s Heart Federation (CHF) the leading cardiac children’s charity also based in Essex where Chris lives.
Why the Children’s Heart Federation?
The Children’s Heart Federation supports families whose children face complex and often life-threatening cardiac conditions. From providing practical resources to offering emotional and financial support, the CHF is a lifeline for thousands.
“As a father myself, I couldn’t imagine the pain of watching a child endure something so terrifying. Partnering with CHF felt like the right thing to do, both personally and professionally,” Chris explained.
Turning Purpose into Action
Chris didn’t just want to raise awareness—he wanted to make a tangible difference. Together with Raj and the CHF team, Well Financial have launched an ongoing fundraising initiative to support CHF via supporting the CHF families, volunteers and friends with professional and friendly mortgage and insurance advice which gives back to CHF in the form of meaningful donations.
So far, these efforts have helped raise meaningful funds for the charity and Chris and Raj truly believe that several valuable INR machines per month could be purchased to give CHF children the full care they need at home.
The Road Ahead
Chris’s journey is a testament to medical science, gratitude, and the power of purpose. While his heart attack may have been an unexpected detour, it’s one that has paved the way for meaningful change—not just in his own life, but for countless families who benefit from CHF’s support every year.
