Preparing for Winter

Winter brings extra challenges for children with heart conditions. Cold weather can put more strain on the heart and lungs, and viruses like colds, flu, RSV, COVID-19 and norovirus can cause more complications. Preparing for winter and planning ahead can make the season easier and safer.

Make sure your child is up to date with vaccinations, including flu and ask your team if your child is eligible for additional protection such as the RSV antibody.

Encourage regular handwashing, good cough hygiene, and avoiding close contact with people who are unwell.

A balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables plus a multivitamin is advised.

Keeping warm is especially important — dress your child in layers, use hats and gloves, and ensure bedrooms are warm at night. At home, balance warmth with ventilation to reduce germs spreading.

Stock up on any essential medications before the holiday season and keep a written plan of what to do and who to contact if your child becomes unwell.

School and childcare settings should also be informed about your child’s extra vulnerability during winter, so they can support with infection prevention and rest when needed.
