Mental Health Support for Children with CHD and their Families
You may remember, as part of our acknowledgement of mental health week in May 2024 we conducted a short survey to find out more about the mental health support available for children with heart conditions, their families and carers across the UK.
Here we present back our findings, which we hope will inform our future activities to provide some more support in these areas.
An initial survey
Advances have seen the morbidity and mortality associated with congenital heart disease (CHD) reduce over the last 20 years. More people are living with CHD and it has been highlighted that this brings a higher prevalence of mental health difficulties when compared to the wider population (Kovacs et al, 2022). Within the UK, recent figures show that access to Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services (CYPMHS) is increasingly challenged, with 270,300 children waiting for mental health support in England alone (Children’s Commissioner, 2024).
CHF conducted a survey of members to highlight current patient experiences and inform future projects for the charity. An anonymous online survey was shared with members.
