Bethany's Story

told by herself

My entire life I prepared for a dance career and just entered a prestigious pre-professional program when I was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy at 17.

At first, my heart thickness wasn’t concerning; over time, it’s significantly worsened. I’m on my second implanted defibrillator.

I no longer dance. It’s tough seeing others living more normally, living my dream. I’ve felt sad, ugly, defeated, but just for moments. Because I’ve realized life doesn’t end with a diagnosis; it pivots. Mine has shaped me. I often flaunt being bionic and show off my scars. They’re the reason for my strength, understanding, and gratitude.
