Youth Camp in Finland for young people with CHD

CHF are providing six places at the first European wide Youth Camp in Finland 2nd to 9th August 2019.

For an application form email finland@chfed.org.uk, applicants must live in the UK and be a young person with a heart condition aged between 14 and 18 years old when the camp takes place.

The aim/purpose of the camp
• Opportunities and possibilities for young people (aged 14-18 yrs) with CHD to experience a range of opportunities in a different, but safe, environment.
• Cultural exchange, improving language-skills
• Peer to peer support, new information
• Networking – a chance to make new friends from all over Europe.

The Camp venue – Poukama

Conference hotel Poukama is a meeting and free time centre situated at Emäsalo (40km from Helsinki 15km from Porvoo

• Accommodation is in apartments for four people
• A nurse will be available 24/7 at the camp venue (arranged by the Finnish Association)
• The camp venue is located 50 km from the Helsinki University Hospital.

Friday 2nd August

16.00 arrival at Helsinki-Vantaa airport.  Transportation to the campsite by bus (maximum one hour), check in.
18.00 – 19.00 dinner
19.00 – 20.00 going through the rules and the programme
20.00 evening programme at the campfire (getting acquainted, introduction of the countries and participants)

Saturday 3rd August
8.00 – 9.00 breakfast
9.00 – 10.00 getting acquainted with the camp venue
10 .00 – 12.00 “get together” games
12.00 – 13.00 lunch
13.30 – 17.00 activities and experiences, (e.g. giant labyrinth, printing t-shirts)
17.00 – 18.00 some free time
18.00 – 19.00 dinner
19.00 – 21.00 possibility to go to sauna and have a swim and hot tub

Sunday 4th August
8.00 – 9.00 breakfast
9.00 – 11.00 team works – What do we have in common? Questions relating to next day’s lecture
11.00 – 12.00 lunch
12 – 18.00 a boat cruise to Porvoo (sightseeing, some free time at Porvoo)
18.00 – return to camp venue, dinner
20.00 – spending evening together at campfire

Monday 5th August
8.00 – 9.00 breakfast
9.00 – 11.00 lecture (medical or other)
11.00 – 12.00 lunch
12.30 – visiting water-amusement park, Serena, Espoo
18.00 – return to camp venue, dinner
20.00 – spending evening together at campfire

Tuesday 6th August
8.00 – 9.00 breakfast
9.00 – 12.00 first-aid training
12.00 -13.00 lunch
13.00 – 16.00 activities and experiences (e.g. “tappara” and traditional Finnish games)
16.00 – 17.00 some free time
17.00 – 19.00 possibility to go to sauna and have a swim
19.00 – dinner at the giant Laplander’s Hut, evening programme arranged by the participants

Wednesday 7th August
9.00 – 10.00 breakfast
10.00 – to Helsinki (sightseeing, time for shopping, lunch at Helsinki) – return to the camp approximately 17.30
18.00 – 19.00 dinner
20.00 – 24.00 disco

Thursday 8th August
8.00 – 9.00 breakfast
9.00 – 12.00 activities and experiences (i.e. cable slide)
12.00 – 13.00 lunch
14.00 – 16.00 activities continue
16.00 – 18.00 group session; what have we learnt during the week?
17.00 – 19.00 possibility to go to sauna and have a swim
19.00 – farewell dinner at the Fisherman’s cottage and entertainment arranged by the participants

Friday 9th August
8.00 – 9.00 breakfast
9.00 – 10.30 evaluation of the camp, feedback and summary
10.30 preparing the departure, checking out
11.30 lunch and departure to the airport
13.00 at the airport (at latest)

General information

The camp will be conducted in English

Each participant should have a flying permit from their doctor and their heart condition in general should be in a stable mode in order to participate in the camp’s programme

The camp is arranged with the co-operation of the European Congenital Heart Disease Organisation ECHDO and it is partially funded by the Finnish Funding Centre for Social Welfare and Health Organisations (STEA).
