The CHF Molly’s Dolly service continues to be one of our most popular. This Children’s Heart Week we’re giving you the opportunity to help give a heart child the gift of a their own personalised rag doll.
The Molly’s Dolly service started when a young girl named Molly began asking questions about the scar on her chest when she started school. Like every parent with a young child who has undergone major heart surgery, her mother Ita was faced with the difficult challenge of explaining the scarring and her condition.
After calling the CHF helpline, we put her idea of making custom made rag dolls with surgical scars on their chest into action. We gave the first one to Molly and named them ‘Molly’s Dollies’ in her honour. Since then, CHF have provided thousands of dolls, all sewn with scars that match their own special heart child, which has helped many young children cope major heart surgery.
A CHF Molly’s Dolly costs approximately £20 to supply, customise and send to heart child.
You can contribute to the CHF Molly’s Dolly fund by texting DOLL20 and an amount of £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 to 70070 .
“I wanted to say thank you so much for my daughter’s Molly’s Dolly which you sent to us a few weeks ago. She has accompanied Mia on all of her recent trips to hospital and will be there when she goes in for her heart surgery next month. I can’t tell you what it means to her to feel like she has ‘someone’ in it with her.”
We spend a lot of time preparing [Thomas] beforehand to try to make the experience [of surgery] less scary for him. Having his dolly helped us do that and although the three weeks in hospital was still pretty awful, it wasn’t as horrific and frightening as it might have been.”
