Dear ___________ MP,

Re: Pulse Oximetry testing of all newborns to detect heart conditions

I live in your constituency and am writing to you about a test which could help detect heart conditions and save children’s lives in our area.

Pulse Oximetry screening measures the oxygen levels in the blood. The test is cheap, easy to administer and painless. The equipment is already in many hospitals and Pulse Oximetry testing is often used on adults already.

Babies also already have newborn checks so this could simply be added in to form part of these standard tests and would take just a few minutes.

Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defect affecting around 1 in every 133 children in theUKor around 5000 to 6000 each year. Unfortunately only a third are picked up before birth and many go undiagnosed, sometimes for weeks or even months. This can cause distress for the baby and family as well as possible long term physical damage and even risk to life. Getting more conditions diagnosed early could help save money distress and save lives.

Pulse Oximetry screening is proven to be effective, with research recently published in the Lancet showing it can increase detection of heart conditions to around three quarters and evidence that it is a cost-effective test. The test is non-evasive, quick, cheap and can be done along side other newborn checks.

I hope as my MP that you can support the introduction of this important test for newborns. Please support the campaign and I would be grateful if you could write to our local hospital trust to ask if the hospital uses the test on babies and if not why not.

Any other help you can offer in ensuring this test is adopted would also be appreciated, I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely
